'Huli'
watercolour paintings
2016 - 2017
This series of watercolour portraits capture the Huli tribesmen from Papua New Guinea in all their splendour, adorned with traditional tribal regalia. Their faces are painted in vibrant yellow and red tones, made of natural pigments creating a mask which is integral to the Huli's cultural identity. The soft textures of the watercolour medium highlight the intricate patters of their faces while blending seamlessly with the earthy tones of the background, evoking the lush forests that are their homeland.
The backdrop hints to the beautiful but vulnerable environment where the Huli reside. The fading greens and encroaching grey tones reflect the ongoing environmental threats to the region. The Huli tribe faces an endangered status due to habitat destruction caused by rampant deforestation and natural gas extraction. These activities disrupt the delicate ecological balance of their environment, threatening their way of life.
